Grade 1 Curriculum - USA

First grade marks an exciting transition from learning-through-play to more structured academic learning. Our curriculum is carefully designed to align with Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the C3 Framework for Social Studies—the standards followed by schools across the United States.

English Language Arts (Reading & Writing)

Reading Skills

Phonics & Decoding: Master consonant blends (bl, st, tr), digraphs (sh, ch, th), and vowel teams (ai, ea, oa, oo)
Sight Words: Learn 100+ high-frequency words for reading fluency
Reading Comprehension: Understand story elements including characters, setting, and beginning-middle-end structure
Text Types: Distinguish between fiction and non-fiction texts
Reading Fluency: Read grade-level texts with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression

Writing Skills

Three Writing Types:
- Narrative: Create stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end
- Informative: Write simple how-to texts and factual descriptions
- Opinion: State preferences and provide supporting reasons
Grammar Foundations: Correct usage of capitalization and punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points)
Sentence Structure: Write complete sentences with proper subject-verb agreement
Parts of Speech: Identify and use nouns, verbs, and adjectives

Mathematics

Number Sense & Operations

Count, read, and write numbers up to 120
Understand place value: tens and ones
Master addition and subtraction facts within 20
Solve word problems using addition and subtraction
Understand the relationship between addition and subtraction (fact families)

Measurement & Data

Measure length using non-standard and standard units
Tell and write time to the hour and half-hour
Organize and interpret simple data using charts and graphs
Recognize and count coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)

Geometry

Identify and create 2D shapes (triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, hexagons)
Recognize 3D shapes (cubes, cones, cylinders, spheres)
Partition shapes into halves and quarters
Understand spatial relationships and positional words
